The True Anatomy of a Strike Action

The Doctors think they are fighting the Government and the Government thinks it is fighting the doctors - but is that what is really happening? What is the truth?

The word 'strike' means 'to hit at something very hard with the intention of harming or destroying it'.

We see an example of this in action in a physical boxing match where the two opponents trade blows. You strike your opponent, maybe on the head, and your opponent also strikes you back, maybe on your face or chest, and you continue to exchange punches until one person succumbs.

In an industrial action, however, there is a gross distortion of this arrangement. Rather than hit each other directly the combatants look for a vulnerable third party, weak and defenseless, whom they know is connected with the elephant they are fighting in some way and then they actually strike at this helpless target!  People ‘on strike’ chose their targets carefully, striking at those who cannot strike back at them or fight them back.  In the present case, it is vulnerable patients who are being struck. The doctors know they are not going to receive any 'blows' back from the patients.

Seen in this light, the strike action is a very cowardly act. If you have trouble with your employer, go and talk to him and if he refuses to listen to you, pray and go again. And if he still doesn't listen to you, resign and look for another job.  It is unjust, cruel and rather strange that if you have a disagreement with your employers, you should strike patients in the hope that your real opponent will care enough about the patients to concede to your demands!

Here in Ghana such would be a vain hope and a serious miscalculation anyway.  If the doctors themselves, the avowed ‘carers’ and supposedly in one of the ‘Caring Professions’, do not care about what happens to patients, how can they expect the government to do any better than them and care enough to come and act on their behalf.   As a people, we have become a nation whose hearts are hard and calloused. Caring for one another seems to be very far from us.  Everybody simply wants more money for themselves!  But here is the truth that we need to take to heart:  although the patients cannot reply to the doctors or the government, they do have an advocate, who is no one else but God himself.

This is what the Lord Jesus Christ said about caring for people:
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”    Matthew 25:34-38, 40 NIV

Looking after and caring for the sick is actually caring for God Himself. And the converse is also true. Refusing to care for people is refusing to care for God.

So who is this strike against?   The doctors are not striking at the Government, they are striking at patients and hence at God. And the government is not striking at the doctors, it is also striking at God.  Doctors and government, beware! You both have legitimate and genuine grievances but you are using the wrong method to achieve your ends.

For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.  Hebrews 10:30-31 NIV

Striking or hitting at the weak and vulnerable in our society is a sign of emotional and spiritual immaturity and should never be used as a weapon to seek redress for any grievance (no matter how genuine) that we might have. And the government should also learn to treat people with respect and not exasperate them so that they feel they have to adopt such crude and cruel means to get what they want.

Doctors must change their ways and the government must also change its ways. Lest they both fall into the hands of the almighty God who is always at the defense of the defenseless, the weak and the vulnerable.

The Emperor’s New Marriage.

Watching President Obama on CNN congratulating a key LGBT rights advocate on what was considered to be a landmark victoryfor the LGBT community following the SCOTUS ruling, my mind went back to Hans Christian Andersons childrens story, The Emperors New Clothes.  There are some striking parallels between that story and our modern-day ongoing story of the legalization of gay marriage.
In Andersons story, two devious weavers promise to make their Emperor a suit of clothes of such light and fine fabric that it would be visible only to those who were fit for high positions, wise and competent. By deduction, a person who was unable to see these clothes must be incompetent, stupid and not fit for high office. A deal was struck and the weavers set to work. The only trouble was that they were not weaving anything, they were only moving their hands through the air.
First, a high ranking minister came to inspect the work. Even though he could not see any cloth, for fear of being thought stupid and incompetent, he gave a positive and glowing report to the Emperor. When the finished suit was brought to the Emperor he nearly fainted at the realisation that he could not see anything in the hands of the con men.  Again, for fear of being thought stupid, he offered lavish praise for the non-existent clothes. The powerful deception had taken hold. But the con men had not finished their work; they pushed further; they asked the Emperor to change into these new clothes (which he did leaving himself naked by the way!) and to go on a procession to show off his new clothesto his countrymen and women.  And he did!
All the people who came out to see the Emperor pass by were privately shocked to see his nakedness but they kept their thoughts to themselves, pretending that they too could see the amazing new clothes after all, they had also heard the line: Only the stupid and incompetent will fail to see these new clothes.
A stranger happening on the scene would surely have thought that the entire population had been jinxed! How did the con men succeed so easily? Well, they took what was basically a lie – ‘no clotheswere being called beautiful clothes- and attached to the lie things that were highly valued in the culture at the time: wisdom and competence.
This unholy mixture was potent enough to jinx everyone, from citizens, ministers, parliamentarians, all the way to the Emperor.  Although everyone could see that there were no clothes on their emperor, the fear of being thought stupid and incompetent was strong enough to stop people from speaking the plain truth. They all pretended.
I believe that this is exactly what has been going on during the process of the legalization of gay marriage in the nations.  Everyone could see that it was not possible to have a marriage between two persons of the same sex but the advocates for same-sex marriage took a lie (that a man can marry a man and a woman can marry a woman) and attached to it great values within the cultures of these nations: equality, egalitarianism, human rights.  The result was an unholy mixture which was potent enough to deceive so many people: from citizens, to parliamentarians, to presidents and prime ministers and even many in Gods holy church!
As in the Emperors story, the procession is on as many presidents and their associates travel round the world trying to show off their new marriagesto the world. But just as there was a child, in Andersons story, who was free to tell the truth and blurted out: "But he isn't wearing anything at all!", there will be a child who is free and has not been conned yet, and has nothing to lose, who will speak it out:  But this is not a marriage!”  And if the children have all been contaminated with these lies in their classrooms, I believe that a donkey will yet speak out!  Then the playacting will stop. And that will be an interesting moment.
Come on, lets face it: two people of the same sex attempting to marry is, to use a modern-day analogy, like trying to make a laptop from two sets of hard ware.  What you will produce at the end is a jumble of metal.  It is not a laptop and can never work as a laptop.  A laptop is a laptop because it has two different parts: the hardware and the software. When both are present then it can really go.
Here is the truth:
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.””   Genesis 1:27-28 NIV. Our Lord Jesus confirms this when teaching on marriage: ““Havent you read,he replied, that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”” Matthew 19:4-6 NIV
May our God visit us again in power and break the jinx over the nations that all might be truly free again and see the truth and speak the truth and begin to live in the truth before it gets too late.
